The Masks We Wear and How to Live Without Them

One day I was having lunch with a friend and she would always complain about her life, I finally had the courage to  ask her why she complained so much to me. Her reply was, “Because I know you have a miserable life just like me.” This was a real eye opener, because I did not have a miserable life, and it certainly wasn’t like hers! At that moment I realized what had just happened. My friend placed a “mask” on me so she could have the opportunity to whine and complain. This “mask” was invisible yet powerful, and it worked. She gave me the “submissive friend mask” and by wearing it, I allowed her to dominate the conversation to all the sordid details of her crazy life and ensue in all the drama. I did not want to wear that “mask” anymore and I diplomatically told her. That changed the dynamics of our relationship (much to my surprise) and I realized that this is an age old problem. What should I do when someone tries to force me into being someone THEY want me to be.! What do I do when someone places a label on me and won’t let me be my authentic self? What do I do when someone expects me to be submissive even when I am not? What do I do when someone calls me a loser and I am not? I could on forever. Out of these questions, my book was born. This is a topic very close to my heart because all my life I have been shedding “masks” that were given to me by either my family or cultural traditions.
